The Boy Who Defeated Death

Markandeya was destined to die at age 16

On his death day, he sat in deep meditation before a Shiva Linga

Yama (god of death) came to take him — Markandeya clung to the Shiva Linga

Shiva emerged angrily from the Linga, struck Yama and declared: 'He who is devoted to me shall not be taken by Death.'

Markandeya was granted eternal life and youth

The Pralaya Vision

In meditation, Markandeya was shown the great flood (pralaya) by Lord Vishnu

He saw the universe dissolve into water, and a tiny baby floating on a banyan leaf, sucking its toe
